Cole Escola’s next role is a theatrical assassin

Cole Escola is about to bring some serious flair to the high seas. In a move we really didn't see coming, the Tony-winning performer has officially joined Netflix’s One Piece for its third season, taking on the role of Bon Clay – a character described as “a master of performance and precision” who’s every bit as dangerous as they are dazzling.

In other words, a theatrical assassin who turns every fight into a work of art. Sounds like the perfect fit for Escola. Here's what you need to know.

What do we know so far about season three?

For fans of the hit live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s legendary manga, this casting is another exciting reason to look forward to what’s next. One Piece was renewed for a third season in August, even before season two’s debut (set for 10 March). That’s a clear sign Netflix has plenty of confidence in the Straw Hat crew’s continuing adventures.

Behind the scenes, One Piece season three will be steered by showrunners Joe Tracz and Ian Stokes, alongside original creator Eiichiro Oda and the production team at Tomorrow Studios. With Escola stepping into Bon Clay’s glittering shoes, fans can expect an extra dose of camp, chaos, and charisma when the Straw Hats set sail again.

What is it about?

The series follows Monkey D. Luffy, played by Iñaki Godoy, as he sets out to find the fabled treasure known as the One Piece and become King of the Pirates. Season two promises even wilder territory as Luffy and his friends venture into the Grand Line – a sea where danger and wonder await at every turn. Expect bizarre islands, eccentric new foes, and probably a few unforgettable costumes along the way.

What else has Escola been up to?

As for Escola, this marks another major milestone in an already impressive run. Their 2024 Broadway hit Oh, Mary! – a delightfully unhinged reimagining of Mary Todd Lincoln – earned rave reviews and a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play. On screen, audiences know them from HBO Max’s Search Party, Hulu’s Difficult People, and TruTV’s At Home With Amy Sedaris. Escola also flexed their writing skills on Showtime’s Ziwe.
