Coco Gauff's relationship with fashion launched at the ripe old age of 15. Only a teenager, she qualified for Wimbledon in 2019 and defeated fellow American champion Venus Williams – not to mention the year prior she had just secured her ambassadorship with New Balance at 14 years old.
Since then, her partnership with the athleisure brand has become a defining element of her career. As she evolved from a teenage prodigy into a Grand Slam champion, her wardrobe evolved alongside her. In 2022, ahead of her US Open appearance after reaching the Grand Slam final at Roland Garros French Open, New Balance unveiled the Coco CG1, Gauff's first signature tennis shoe. The shoe immediately became synonymous with her personal brand – and, by extension, New Balance.
By 2023, Gauff won her first Grand Slam singles title at the US Open at the age of 19 – competing, naturally, in her own signature line – and cementing a recognisable visual identity in the process. Fashion houses and creative minds quickly took notice, recognising Gauff as a style figure in her own right. The crossover felt natural for an athlete who frequently cites Serena Williams as a primary influence, describing her as the OG (if not the GOAT) of bringing expressive fashion to the court. More recently, Gauff has expanded her relationship with New Balance by bringing Miu Miu into the mix for a collaboration that bridged luxury fashion and performance wear. Skirts, polos, shoes and accessories have all entered her on-court rotation. This year we even were granted another collection, all-white tailored specifically to Wimbledon's dress code.
If Serena Williams proved that a tennis court could serve as a fashion runway, Gauff belongs to the generation that takes that pushes that premise further. She ties performance, personal style and high luxury together in the same game.
