Brat summer is over — Charli XCX is starring in Takashi Miike’s next horror film

Charli XCX

Charli XCX just declared Brat summer is over, and she's already planned her next move. The singer is entering her horror era, starring in and producing the next film from Japanese cult auteur Takashi Miike.

The untitled project, penned by Ross Evans, will be produced through Charli’s newly launched banner Studio365 — the same company behind her upcoming A24 debut, The Moment. Details remain under wraps, but with Miike involved (best known for his brutal classics Audition and Ichi the Killer), expect things to take a fairly gory turn. For Charli, it’s another move toward shaping culture from behind (and in front of) the camera, and marks an evolution in her artistic arc — from pop instigator to multi-hyphenate creative force. Below, what we know so far.

Who is involved?

So far, Charli is the only star signed on to appear in the project. Since the release of Brat, Charli has been steadily shifting her energy into film. What began as a few buzzy casting announcements has quickly become a full slate: she’ll star in Aidan Zamiri’s The Moment, Julia Jackman’s 100 Nights of Hero alongside Nicholas Galitzine and Emma Corrin, and make a cameo in Benito Skinner's upcoming series, Overcompensating. There's also Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex, and The Gallerist, a Cathy Yan-directed thriller with Natalie Portman and Jenna Ortega.

As for Miike, his filmography spans over 100 titles across horror, erotica, drama, and dark comedy, and he's largely considered one of cinema’s most ungovernable forces. His latest film, Sham, premieres at Tribeca this year.

Evans is relatively new to the screenwriting game. His first major project was a the screen adaptation of How To Save A Marriage, which Robert Pattinson both stars in and produced. It's currently in development, with no concrete release date.

When will it come out?

Further details are scant, including a release date. With teh cast yet to be assembled, and the project so-far unnamed, we're hoping for a 2027 release date.
