charlie xcx movie reviews

If Brat summer proved anything, it's that Charli XCX is a tastemaker of her generation. And not only does she loom large over our playlists, but now, she's here to influence what we watch, as well.

Yep, nearly six months on since her Letterboxd account was first leaked, and the singer has taken to doing fully-fledged reviews on both TikTok and Instagram. Want to emulate Miss XCX's watch-list? Now you can. Keep reading for more...

Unzipped (1995)

What she said: "This documentary Unzipped is my favourite thing that I've seen so far this month [June]. It's by Douglas Keeve and it follows Isaac Mizrahi as he is prepping for his New York Fashion Week collection. If you love fashion, you should watch this documentary. There are incredible appearances from all the girls, the Kates, the Naomis, the Christies, etc, etc. There's also really good cameos from Galliano, Polly Mellen, lots of others. But I think, above all, the thing this documentary does well is it really showcases the way an artist goes through their creative process. It showcase the surges of inspiration, it showcases the self doubt, the vulnerability, and then the triumph at the end when you really feel that you've achieved something truly amazing."

Catwalk (1995)

What she said: "[This] specifically follows Christy Turlington through one season. It shows her going to Milan, then to Paris, then to New York. Again, really honest, mostly in black and white. Really shows her relationship with Naomi and other models... great scene with Carla Bruni. It's cool, it's very cool. Also, a really good soundtrack by Malcom McLaren."

Part of the Weekend Never Dies (2008)

What she said: "I guess I'm kind of on a documentary kick this month... Really good if you like watching people party. There's amazing party footage in this. Obviously from a time when people weren't really using their phones at gigs, so the atmosphere is literally palpable. Also shout out my tour manager who's in this documentary."

The Bling Ring (2013)

What she said: "I watched The Bling Ring for the fourth time. I feel like it feels more culturally relevant every single time that i rewatch it. When i watch this film it feels like I am reading, like, a salacious gossip magazine, which I kind of think is the entire point. Um, also I think the fashion is, like, obviously back. Like, all the wardrobes in this movie kind of look like Addison's closet. It's giving High Fashion."

Au Hasard Balthazar (1966)

What she said: "This is so, so, so, so, so, so sad. So, yeah. Watch this if you wanna cry, 'cos I did."

28 Years Later (2025)

What she said: "I actually watched this in between sound check and performing at Dua Lipa's show. I just needed to run across the road and see this. Danny Boyle is back."

The Appointment (1982)

What she said: "I loved it. This guy [director], Lindsey Vickers, he only made this one movie, and then also, like, a dcoumetnary for the BBC on Richmond. Um, this is very surreal, very uncanny. Kind of reminds me of British TV shows I grew up watching, like The Queen's Nose. There's just something odd about it. Kind of like Twin Peaks-y vibes... I just really loved this movie.

2003 (2022)

What she said: Then I watched Harris Dickinson's short film. I saw his movie Urchin at Cannes and I just thought it was really fabulous, so I wanted to see more of his work."

The Happening (2008)

What she said:  "Then I was in Italy with George, and we went on an M. Night [Shyamalan] binge. I've never seen The Happening, I guess it kind of got panned-ish when it came out? But I thought this movie was fabulous. The casting was kind of funny to me, it was Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanell playing a couple — never see them together, like in real life, but i guess this is movies. One thing that's really fun about this is that Mark Wahlberg's character has a mood ring that he's obsessed with for, kind of, no apparent reason. And the mood ring is huge, so that's just sort of an extra funny thing."

The Village (2004)

What she said: "I really love this film. I don't know if this makes sense, but... watching M. Night movies... it feels like going to a theme park. If you know what I mean, then you know what I mean. But if you don't, I'm sorry.

Salò (1975)

What she said: "I don't feel like I really need to get into this one, you can do all the reading on the internet."

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025)

What she said: "And then I went for a palate cleanse, and watched Bridget Jones 4. I actually haven't seen the third one. I don't really think it matters. I cried twice. I'm very much on my period."

Mouchette (1967)

What she said: "And finally, I watched Mouchette. I've been very into Robert Bresson at the moment. I really, really like his films. I like how he worked with non-experienced actors. His films, to me, are so simple but so poignant, and I can't wait to watch more of his films."
