Austin Butler is not the kind we'd necessarily pick to get caught up in an elaborate criminal scheme, but in Caught Stealing, that's exactly his character's fate. Fresh from the red carpet at Cannes, where he's been busy promoting his latest cinematic feat, A24's Eddington, and the actor already has another project to sink our teeth into. Add Zoë Kravitz to the story, and you get the latest crime thriller en route to our screens. Everything we know about Caught Stealing, below.

What is Caught Stealing about?

Set in the grimy undercurrent of 1990s New York, Caught Stealing follows Hank Thompson (Butler), a once-promising baseball player whose life has stalled behind a bar and beside his girlfriend, Yvonne (Kravitz). Things unravel fast when his neighbour asks him to look after his cat. But what seems like a harmless favour pulls Hank into a violent chain of events involving gangsters, secrets, and a lot of blood, all without a clear reason why he’s at the centre of it.

Who else is involved?

Directed by Darren Aronofsky and adapted from Charlie Huston’s cult crime novel, the film is a mix of thriller and black comedy, with Aronofsky’s signature tension tying it all together. It's the first project Aronofsky has directed since The Whale, back in 2022, which saw Brendan Fraser take home the Acadamy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Needless to say, we have high hopes for this one.

The supporting cast is stacked, with Regina King, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Bad Bunny, and Carol Kane on board, each playing a part in Hank’s increasingly chaotic descent.

When does Caught Stealing come out?

Thankfully, there's not too long to wait for this one. Caught Stealing is slated for release in the US on August 29, 2025. We'll keep you updated when an Australian release date is firmed up.
