Yes, this haircut has been around since practically the dawn of time, but we're seeing the buzzed look make its way back onto quite a few of our favourite creative minds of late.
There's nothing like watching a drastic reveal where one partner shaves their head while the other mourns their luscious locks – I have to say, it makes for some of the most comedic viewing on social media. I live for the drama of it all. But to me, there is also nothing sexier. All the greats have done it – Sinéad O'Connor, Eminem, Angelina Jolie and, more recently, Harry Styles. However, I think we can categorise the 'buzz cut' separately from a fully shaved head, with not a sprout of hair to blow in the wind. And a bleached buzz cut really takes the cake. Something about it signals boldness and confidence – and who doesn't love that in someone?
Recently, the buzz cut has been doing something to us. We've had Norwegian footballer Erling Haaland shave off his long hair and, like we said, a platinum buzz cut is an absolute power play. We've also had internet personality Jake Shane get the buzz, while one actor who has frequently repped the haircut over the past few years is Drew Starkey.
The cut can often signal a fresh start, physically and emotionally. It can be a symbolic way of releasing a part of yourself that no longer serves you.
How to ask your hair stylist for a buzz cut
You might think this is a simple request, but buzz cuts come in all shapes and sizes. We have the common buzz cut, which is the same length across your entire head, and then there's also the overgrown look. This essentially uses the same guard on the clippers as any buzz cut, but leaves the hair a little longer, adding texture while keeping maintenance minimal.
There's also the option of integrating a fade, which allows for longer hair on top of the head, with a lower taper around the back and sides. This adds a bit of dimension and shape to the silhouette. Deciding whether you want to dye or bleach it something fun is another choice you can make. While the hair is short, there's an opportunity to take more risks than you normally would.
