There's not much more quintessentially English than a puddle-soaked sidewalk; its silent and rarely punctuated surface only broken by the ripple of more rain or the occasional splash of a sodden Londoner's boot. Unless of course, those puddles are made entirely out of hardened, glossy resin, spread across the floor to mimic the appearance of rain-soaked, wet pavement, like they were at the Burberry AW26 show this week.
Beneath the iron ribcage of the old Billingsgate fish market – and backdropped by its own purpose-built miniature London skyline complete with Tower Bridge – Daniel Lee showed his latest outing for the English fashion House as part of London Fashion Week. Parodying a "night out in bad weather" with his set, the collection naturally encircled outerwear (a House staple), across a palette of plums, navy blues, slate greys and pine greens.
Central to the outerwear was of course a series of re-worked trench coats styled with water-falling frilled collars and repurposing leather belts as robe-like waist fasteners (as if the average Londoner was too busy running out the door to even stop and fasten their buckle properly, so instead haphazardly knotted it merely for the function of keeping their coat closed to the cold).
Elsewhere hyper-realistic animal hides and fur-like garments also marked the collection (although we should note that Burberry since 2018 has adopted an entirely fur-free policy, so those shown on the runway are all faux).
Accessories were markedly English too – all Mary Janes, quilted leather biker boots and slouchy, oversized leather bags.
As has become customary for the House these last few seasons, models on the runway were also interspersed by a slew of faces familiar to the Burberry family – from Romeo Beckham to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. In the crowd, Barry Keoghan, Lila and Kate Moss, Leo Woodall, Marisa Abela, Myha’la, brothers Jacob and Noah Jupe, Alexa Chung, Mia Regan, David Jonsson, Karen Elson, Bridgerton's Luke Thompson and Simone Ashley, Stellan Skarsgård, Matthew Macfadyen, Olivia Dean, Daisy Edgar-Jones, PinkPantheress, Lennon and Gene Gallagher, Jodie Turner-Smith, Skepta, Little Simz, Iris Law and more.
