As the third and final chapter of The Summer I Turned Pretty draws to a close, our obsession with it isn't going anywhere. Without sounding too dramatic, our emotional stability this year has quite literally depended on the outcome of this season and, more specifically, the love triangle at the centre of it.
But in case you weren't aware, the story of Isabel (Belly) and her complicated relationships with brothers Conrad and Jeremiah actually first came to life on the pages of Jenny Han's three books. Luckily for us, that also means that, while we wait for the movie to be released, there's plenty to fill the Cousins Beach-shaped hole in our hearts, in the form of books that hit a similar nerve.
From slow-burn love stories to heartbreaking spirals, here are six novels like The Summer I Turned Pretty to read next.
1. Happy Place by Emily Henry
The plot of this book is simple: a couple fakes being together after breaking for one last idyllic summer at their friend group's holiday house. The result is a holiday set in a quaint seaside town filled with nostalgia, tension, and some very emotionally charged scenes. If you’re craving The Summer I Turned Pretty energy — but with adults who’ve known each other for years — this is the one.
2. Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors
When Cleo, a 24-year-old artist, meets Frank one New Year's Eve, an advertising executive 20 years her senior, a whirlwind romance leads to a spontaneous marriage. But what begins as something impulsive and fun quickly becomes complicated. Set in New York, Cleopatra and Frankenstein explores the highs and lows of love, mental health, and identity.
3. The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Helle
Elle’s annual retreat to her family’s beach house is, as always, filled with memories and complicated feelings. But when an unexpected encounter forces her to confront her past, she faces a decision that could upend her entire life. This is an emotionally read that is particularly hard to put down.
4. Notes on Your Sudden Disappearance by Alison Espach
Set over fifteen years, this book follows Sally as she navigates life before, during, and after the tragic loss of her sister Kathy. Their shared fascination with Billy Barnes, the local highschool basketball star, complicates everything — especially when Billy and Kathy become a couple. As Kathy’s absence leaves a lasting hole, Sally and Billy’s complicated connection grows into something unexpected.
5. Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton
While technically more of a memoir than a novel, this book perfectly captures the messy and confusing journey that is life (and particularly love) in your twenties. Like everything Alderton writes, it’s hilarious and brutally honest, and reads like a heart-to-heart with a friend. Ideal for when you need some much-needed perspective.
6. Normal People by Sally Rooney
Another book that's been adapted into a series, Normal People is about the complicated, intense (and sometimes frustrating, for the viewer) connection between Marianne and Connell as they navigate love and growing up. Be warned, it's about as emotionally devastating as they come.
7. The Map That Leads to You by J.P. Monninger
This one’s about Heather and Jack, who meet by chance during separate trips to Europe and find themselves in an unexpected romance. Plus, it’s being adapted into a film starring Madelyn Cline and Kj Apa, so you can look forward to seeing this dreamy story come to life on screen soon, too. If you love stories relationships marred by complicated circumstances, this book will hit the spot.
8. The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood
This BookTok favourite follows Olive, a biology PhD student who convinces an unfriendly professor to fake-date her — but of course, things become way more complicated than planned. The book has been a massive hit, and now it’s being adapted into a film starring Lili Reinhart, who’s also executive producing. So there's never been a better time to get acquainted with the source material.
