Those months in between summer and winter – those too steamy for a duvet but too brisk to leave ourselves exposed to the elements – are the trans-seasonal parts of the year home to the throw. It's a name apt for its languid purposes – a textile so haphazardly tossed over a sofa, an occasional chair, or the foot of a bed that it warrants the louche label. However, despite its lowkey persona, most will vouch that there's a difference between a good throw and a bad one. The scratchy, shedding, gaudy-printed iterations swathed over the couches of our Grandparents are good for not much more than nostalgia. Today, we're seeking to cocoon ourselves in the warmth of a feathery mohair, a buttery soft cashmere, or even a lightweight linen throw.
Evolving from prehistoric animal hides and medieval wall tapestries, there are plenty of homewares brands now churning out blankets ripe for using as a throw.
