Speaks volumes: The return of the balloon pant

best balloon pants

If, like me, the promise (or perhaps I should say threat) of skinny jeans returning to the mainstream in recent seasons has you feeling as nervous as it does nostalgic, then I've got good news for you. Balloon pants have arrived as the perfect antidote to our skinny-leg sins of decades past.

Not strictly a denim trend (for more on that, read up on our guide to non-skinny jean styles), balloon pants are exactly as they sound: lightweight, voluminous, and perhaps a little whimsical.

While the silhouette may feel distinctly of-the-moment, its history is far more layered. Early iterations drew inspiration from the free-flowing styles embraced by hippie communities throughout the 1960s and 1970s, before the oversized proportions of parachute pants became synonymous with American Black culture and hip-hop in the 1980s. The balloon pant as we know it today, however, found its footing during the Y2K era.

In the 2000s, the trend lent more bohemian – origins that several designers of the moment have made a case for in recent seasons. At Chloé Autumn Winter 2026, Chemena Kamali showcased balloon pants in lightweight, flouncy silks – often adorned with ruffled layers, or perhaps so voluminous that they initially read as skirts on the runway.

Michael Kors offered a slightly toned-down take, with several iterations of balloon pants in wearable neutrals for Spring Summer 2026, paired with simple tanks and long statement pendants.

At Alaïa Spring Summer 2025, things took a more minimal turn – literally. Oversized balloon pants in icy blues, soft yellow, black and white were styled with tiny bandeaus and little else.

For those of us escaping winter in search of warmer, European pastures, the balloon pant is an obvious packing essential. They're light enough to get you through a Parisian heatwave, and with the right styling, can carry you from a Grecian beach to a wine bar in Berlin with ease. And if you're bravely shivering through winter on home shores, the balloon pant provides a welcome shake-up to the traditional trouser styles we tend to reach for at this time of year. Style yours with a ballet flat, an oversized knit, perhaps a checked shirt around your waist, and you're ready to take on the chilliest of temperatures while still looking chic.
