The film Backrooms has hit some pretty incredible milestones, and it only released in cinemas last week. Director Kane Parsons has become the youngest director to have a number-one box office film globally. It also delivered the largest original horror debut in history and A24's biggest opening weekend ever. And truly, the list of achievements goes on.
When Parsons was doing the press tour for the film, he made it loud and clear that a sequel was definitely on the cards and something he wanted to pursue. And we're not surprised at all.
Here, we're explaining everything we know about Backrooms 2 – and how it could even evolve into an anthology series.
Kane Parsons said himself a sequel is coming
That's true. According to Deadline after a $118M opening for A24, the production company would be bonkers to turn down another profitable film such as Backrooms. But not only that, Kane Parsons has made it loud and clear on his press tour that a sequel is coming. Stating in one red carpet interview "I would have a very hard time saying it is done. I guess that's what I can say. But I expect to be seeing a little bit more in the not so distant future."
And another source has further told Deadline that Parsons is currently looking for a co-screenwriter. Would it be too obvious to say, please join forces with Obsessions creator – and fellow Youtuber – Curry Barker...
Why was it obvious we were getting a sequel?
Parsons has been building the Backrooms concept on YouTube in mini series for over five years. So it would be hard not to imagine that there's more he wants to tell as a feature film.
The original concept of the Backrooms began as an internet CreepyPasta. No, that isn't a spelling mistake, if you're unfamiliar, CreepyPasta is a short horror story or urban legend of the internet that gets copied and shared around. Like Slender Man.
And as Parsons main internet mini series focuses on A-Sync, and we were left on a cliff hanger about this company at the end of the feature film. It might be safe to say this is Parsons telling his fans more is coming. And if you want to learn more about the lore and rules of Backrooms, we must preface it is quite deep, but the Reddit threads are here to assist.
The sequel would dive into A-Sync
While we have no confirmation on Backrooms 2 officially or what that would look like, we can predict the sequel would go in the direction of exploring A-Sync's research. The company that researches the Backrooms. Delving into the story of who they are and the origins of the entities that live in the backrooms, and more so the true complexity of what the backrooms actually are. Which a lot of audiences have questions about.
They barely touched on this concept that is quite crucial to the concept, and they only introduced Mark Duplas' character, Phil, at the end. And because how deep this concept is, it could even become an anthology. However, in true Backrooms style, we have no idea the direction he could take, so perhaps we could be surprised with an entirely new direction. We'll keep you posted on all the hints we know.
We know Clark won't be in the sequel
If you haven't seen the first film, this will be a spoiler. But rest in peace Clark – we know for certain that due to his death by his terrifying version of himself in the Backrooms eating him, he will not return. There were quite a few deaths in Backrooms.
We think Renate Reinsve character Mary might come back in the sequel as she was alive by the end of the film and made it out alive from the Backrooms. However, it was insinuated that because she made it out and A-Sync caught her, it's an operation classified event that they might have had to kill her in order to keep the Backrooms a secret. We can expect Phil, played by Mark Duplas, to make it in the sequel, due to his character being untouched yet. His character was set up and teased throughout that we think he might be the lead in the sequel.
When is Backrooms 2 released?
As Backrooms 2 hasn't officially had the green light to be created yet, we don't have an official release date. However, as Parsons said "in the not so distant future", for when we can expect more Backrooms.
We could be looking at an end of 2026 production time and late 2027 or early 2028 release date.
