If the idea of drifting to sleep to the soft tones of Harris Dickinson sounds like a dream, consider it granted. There are some stories we just never tire of hearing —  and in the case of Pride and Prejudice, that’s now quite literally true. Audible has unveiled a brand new audio adaptation of Jane Austen’s enduring classic, enlisting none other than Dickinson (alongside a glittering cast of English actors) to play the brooding, misunderstood Mr Darcy.

Whether your heart belongs to Colin Firth’s lake-soaked 1995 Darcy, you swooned over Keira and McFadyen in the 2005 film, or your holding out for Dolly Alderton's forthcoming adapatation, this new retelling might just be your next obsession. Read on for everything you need to know.

Who is cast in the Audible adaptation?

Opposite Dickinson is Industry’s Marisa Abela, stepping into the role of Elizabeth Bennet — sharp, self-possessed and emotionally guarded. This version of Pride and Prejudice doesn’t stray far from the original text, but it does offer a something new, with a vivid, interior perspective of Elizabeth herself.

“Elizabeth Bennet is one of the most fiercely intelligent and iconic characters in literature,” said Abela. “What I love about this adaptation is how it lets us hear her inner world in such a vivid, intimate way — it feels both timeless and fresh.”

Dickinson was similarly reflective: “Darcy has always felt like this classic figure, but recording this gave me a whole new understanding of him. Being part of such a talented cast made it even better.”

That cast includes some major heavyweights: Glenn Close as Lady Catherine De Bourgh, Bill Nighy and Marianne Jean-Baptiste as the long-suffering Mr and Mrs Bennet, Jessie Buckley as Caroline Bingley, Toheeb Jimoh as Mr Bingley, and Sophie Wilde as Jane. Will Poulter is also cast as Mr Wickham, with Patricia Allison, Leah Harvey, Bertie Carvel, and Rosalind Eleazar rounding out the ensemble.

Who else is involved?

Behind the mic, the series was adapted by playwright Lulu Raczka, and directed by Dionne Edwards, marking her debut in audio storytelling. The production is a collaboration with Brock Media, and executive produced by Sarah Brocklehurst.

To top it all off, the adaptation will be released globally in six languages — English, Castilian Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese — each with its own all-star local cast.

When can we listen?

The English language adaptation of Pride and Prejudice will be released in Australia on 9 September, commemorating the year of the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth.

You can pre-order now via Audible.
