Leo Woodall and Emilia Jones join the cast of A24’s ‘Tony’

Tony

After months of speculation, A24 has shared new details on its latest cinematic venture: a biopic on the life of the late Anthony Bourdain, the chef-turned-cultural icon whose voice changed how we saw food, travel, and the world.

Titled Tony, the film has previously found its lead in rising actor Dominic Sessa, best known for his breakout in The Holdovers. It's Sessa's biggest role yet, and will see him portray a formative chapter in young Bordain's life, set in the bohemian seaside town of Provincetown, Massachusetts, in 1976. And now, several other acting heavyweights have been added into the mix.

So, how does one tell the story of one of the most formidable forces in food and culture? Below, everything we know about what's quickly shaping up to be one of the most anticipated biographical dramas in recent memory.

Who else is involved in Tony?

The ensemble cast has officially welcomed Leo Woodall and Emilia Jones into the fold. They'll be joined by Antonio Banderas in another undisclosed role, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the project.

Behind the scenes, Tony is helmed by director Matt Johnson, while the screenplay comes from Todd Bartels and Lou Howe, with A24 partnering on production alongside Star Thrower and Zapruder Films. Executive production duties are in the hands of Bourdain’s longtime estate representative Kimberly Witherspoon, ensuring the portrayal remains as honest and unvarnished as Bourdain himself. Also producing are Chris Stinson, Amy Greene, and co-writer Lou Howe.

What is Tony about?

The film will strip back the layers of Bourdain's endless charisma, to tell his story pre-fame. While details on the plot remain tightly held, we know the story focuses on Bourdain’s formative time in Provincetown, where Bourdain, then a dishwasher and aspiring writer, began to understand that food was more than sustenance—it was narrative, rebellion, and community.

As with many A24 projects, Tony is expected to resist sentimentality in favour of t a clear-eyed look at the man behind one of the most influential cultural figures of the 21st century. And with Sessa confirmed to be stepping into Bourdain’s boots, the film promises to be a deeply human portrait. We're certainly waiting with baited breath.

When will Tony premiere?

Sadly, there's no firm details on a premiere date, but with filming set to begin in May, 2025, we're hoping for a 2026 release. We'll keep you updated as we know more.
