If awkward flirtation were a movie genre, Amelia Dimoldenberg would be its undisputed auteur. Well, that's about to be the case: the creator and host of the cult-favourite interview series Chicken Shop Date is officially stepping into the world of cinema, developing a romantic comedy with Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures. Even better, the plot of the movie is undeniably similar to Dimoldenberg's own life, but with perhaps a slightly more romantic twist. Here's what we know so far.
What is it about?
The project (which is currently untitled) is being billed as a romantic comedy. It centres on a meticulously organised journalist whose carefully constructed life begins to unravel after a routine celebrity interview unexpectedly takes a romantic turn. While specific details are being kept under wraps, having seen Dimoldenberg's interview chemistry with the likes of Andrew Garfield and Billie Eilish, we can only imagine this story will be palpable.
Who is involved?
Dimoldenberg will star in the film as the journalist in question, and is also producing alongside Gloria Sanchez Productions, the company behind projects like Booksmart and Will & Harper. The script is being written by Sarah Heyward, whose résumé spans film and television, including work on HBO’s Girls, and Netflix's adaptation of Emily Henry’s Book Lovers.
It feels like a natural next step for Dimoldenberg, who has built a devoted following by flipping the celebrity interview format on its head with Chicken Shop Date. Beyond the screen, she’s become a red-carpet fixture — most notably as the Academy Awards’ official correspondent, a role she will continue at the 2026 Oscars.
When will it come out?
There’s no release date just yet, with the project still in development. However, with a major studio attached and a creative team well-versed in hilarious storytelling, it’s safe to say this is one rom-com worth keeping on your radar.
