When you're travelling with your friends, it's the little details that make the memories extra special. The morning coffee debriefs after a big night, the late-night secrets spilled over a bottle of wine, and the inside jokes that last long after checkout time. Group holidays have always had their magic — and now, Airbnb is making it easier than ever to turn those “we should” ideas in the group chat into reality.
For many, the phrase “group holiday” brings to mind not just the promise of incredible memories, but might also cause a shudder at the thought of chaotic group chats and endless debates over where to stay, when to go, and how much to spend. Thankfully, Airbnb's Wishlist feature is here to simplify all that. Acting like a collaborative Pinterest board, it lets everyone in the group add potential stays, leave notes, vote on favourites, and adjust dates or guest numbers in one shared space. Communication with hosts has also evolved: the person who made the booking can now invite others into the reservation, giving them direct access to messages and updates. It’s group trip planning, streamlined — so that even if plans change, everyone stays in the loop.
Sport continues to be a major driver for group travel in Australia, with Airbnb reporting a significant rise in bookings around key events over the past year. In Brisbane, group bookings of five or more surged by 120% during the State of Origin, while Sydney saw a 25% increase in groups of nine or more during the British & Irish Lions tour. The trend extends to large-scale participation events too — like the TCS Sydney Marathon, which attracts tens of thousands of runners, many of whom travel with friends or family. “With 35,000 participants and many travelling from interstate or overseas, there are a huge number of runners looking for accommodation,” says Wayne Larden, TCS Sydney Marathon CEO and Race Director. “Often they are travelling with family or friends, so an Airbnb is a much more convenient and cost-effective way for them to travel for the event.”
And it's not just the groups themselves that stand to benefit from this new feature. As Susan Wheeldon, Airbnb Country Manager for Australia explains, there are positive implications for the whole community. “Group bookings are particularly popular with people opting to stay together for events such as the men’s Ashes in Brisbane,” she says. "Groups then spend money at local cafes, pubs and restaurants, and so it’s the community who reaps the benefits while fans save money by splitting the cost of a large property — something that is a key benefit of Airbnb.”

If you’re planning a group getaway in Australia, Airbnb has pulled together a collection of standout stays perfect for larger bookings. Whether they are sprawling country homes with indoor pools and tennis courts for those wanting to truly escape, or cosy eco-retreats for a slower, more mindful break. No matter the request you're looking for, there’s an option to suit every type. And when the cost is shared, these unique stays become as budget-friendly as they are memorable.
So whether you’re dreaming up a holiday with friends, planning a trip to commemorate a big event, or finally acting on that “someday” idea in your group chat, Airbnb is making it simpler than ever to go from talking about it, to experiencing it.
