Robert Eggers is reportedly developing a new adaptation of A Christmas Carol, and if all goes as expected, Willem Dafoe might be along for the ride.
The project is still in early development at Warner Bros., but sources close to the film suggest that Dafoe — who starred in Eggers' Nosferatu just last year — could soon join the cast. It would mark the fourth collaboration between the pair, following The Lighthouse, The Northman and Nosferatu, which became a breakout hit earned four Oscar nominations. Keen to hear what their next project has in store? Keep reading for more details.
What is A Christmas Carol about?
First published by Charles Dickens in 1843, A Christmas Carol is a Victorian novella that follows Ebenezer Scrooge, a cold, miserable man who despises Christmas. One Christmas Eve, he’s visited by a series of spirits: the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come, along with his deceased business partner Jacob Marley. Through these ghostly encounters, Scrooge is forced to confront his life choices, the pain he’s caused, and what his future might hold if he doesn’t change.
Of course, A Christmas Carol has been adapted more times than we can count, but we'd hazard that this version promises something different. Given Eggers’ track record, this won’t be a cosy fireside version of Dickens. Rather, his vision of Victorian London will likely feel closer to a ghost story than a moral fable.
Who is involved?
At this early stage, no official cast or crew have been confirmed, however, insiders say Robert Eggers is firmly attached to direct. This would mark Eggers’ first feature film with Warner Brothers, following his success with Nosferatu, which brought him both critical acclaim and box office success.
Willem Dafoe, Eggers’ frequent collaborator, is widely expected to join the project, with fans and industry watchers speculating he could take on one of the iconic ghost roles or even the role of Ebenezer Scrooge himself.
