Ruschmeyer’s, Montauk

Summer in New York City can be brutal, so in the name of keeping cool, we escape to the beach every chance we get. With its white sands, clear, blue ocean, raw coastline, transcendental sunsets and endless good vibes, Montauk has everything you could wish for in a summer getaway.

Stay …
For a dose of summer camp nostalgia, head straight to Ruschmeyer’s. The Montauk hotel has a relaxed, social and fun vibe that sees guests kicking back in the cabin-inspired rooms, lazing in the hammocks, playing table tennis, and gathering around the campfire post dinner and drinks in the lakeside dining hall. Walk, or ride the hotel’s complimentary bikes, to Montauk’s small but vibey town, which is set back from Kirk Park Beach. Head a little further along and you’ll arrive at my beach of choice, Ditch Plains.

See …
After a hazy beach day and requisite afternoon nap, make your way to The Montauket for prime sunset viewing – best enjoyed with a glass of rose and some pre-dinner fries.

Take …
As little as possible. By day, throw a light, cotton dress over your favourite bikini and pair with easy-wear sandals, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. By night, swap your dress for boyfriend jeans (the mosquitos are merciless), a slouchy short-sleeve shirt, preferably Hawaiian, tied at the front, wedge espadrilles and a generous dab of amber oil. For the face, mascara and moisturiser is all you need.

Taste …
You can’t go to Montauk without eating at least one lobster roll. I recommend Duryea’s Lobster Deck for their sublime view, refined yet relaxed setting and tasty selection of the freshest seafood.
