Paul Davies: Everything Loose Will Land in L.A., Sydney

Tip the world over on its side and everything loose will land in Los Angeles. Inspired by the words of Frank Lloyd Wright, L.A.-based, Australian artist Paul Davies’ exploration of the connection between Los Angeles and Australia takes form through a series of collage prints and paintings.

Drenched in neon hues and surreal shadows, Davies’ paintings capture the iridescent shimmer of Australian and L.A. sunshine, connecting the shared aspirations of local Gold Rush miners and L.A. hopefuls “seeking fame and fortune”, his works reflect upon the vast number of searching souls that land on the shores of Los Angeles each day. An edition of Davies’ collages will accompany the paintings on show at Olsen Gallery, Woollahra. “Like Hockney’s Polaroid collages, my series depict deconstructed scenes that tell a story from different perspectives. The title of my series was inspired by Didion’s book The White Album opens with the line ‘We tell ourselves stories in order to live’.”

Everything Loose Will Land in L.A. opens August 30 from 6pm, and will be on display through September 17.
