Helmut Newton – A Retrospective at Foam Gallery, Amsterdam

“Any photographer who says he’s not a voyeur is either stupid or a liar”– so said Helmut Newton. Humorous always, with a penchant for the outrageous, this was the man who shot Elsa Peretti, resplendent in a bunny costume, against Manhattan skyscrapers and captured Jerry Hall on the beach in a perfectly sculpted wrestle. To be lensed by Newton was to have made it, his dramatic black and white stills cementing his status as an essential artist of the 20th century. From June 17 to September 4 more than 200 photographs captured by the ‘king of kink’ will be on display at Amsterdam’s Foam gallery as part of Helmut Newton – A Retrospective – a large-scale tribute to Newton’s provocative canon.
